The concept of brain death did not evolve to benefit organ transplants.C. Machado, J. Kerein, Y. Ferrer, L. Portela, M. de la C. Garcia & J. M. Manero - 2007 - Journal of Medical Ethics 33 (4):197-200.
Although it is commonly believed that the concept of brain death was developed to benefit organ transplants, it evolved independently. Transplantation owed its development to advances in surgery and immunosuppressive treatment; BD owed its origin to the development of intensive care. The first autotransplant was achieved in the early 1900s, when studies of increased intracranial pressure causing respiratory arrest with preserved heartbeat were reported. Between 1902 and 1950, the BD concept was supported by the discovery of EEG, Crile’s definition of (...)

The Philosophy of Innovation in Management Education: a Study Utilising Aristotle’s Concept of Phronesis.Gabriel J. Costello - 2019 - Philosophy of Management 18 (3):215-230.
While much has been written on phronesis, there is a dearth of empirical work on the how the concept can be developed and implemented in practice, particularly in an educational setting. To address this problem, characteristics of phronesis were identified through a review of current literature and an examination of related themes from a special issue of the Philosophy of Management Journal on the philosophy of innovation. The implementation of the concept was investigated using an illustrative study of ongoing work (...)

    The Declaration of Sydney on human death.C. Machado, J. Korein, Y. Ferrer, L. Portela, M. D. L. C. Garcia, M. Chinchilla, Y. Machado & J. M. Manero - 2007 - Journal of Medical Ethics 33 (12):699-703.
On 5 August 1968, publication of the Harvard Committee’s report on the subject of “irreversible coma” established a standard for diagnosing death on neurological grounds. On the same day, the 22nd World Medical Assembly met in Sydney, Australia, and announced the Declaration of Sydney, a pronouncement on death, which is less often quoted because it was overshadowed by the impact of the Harvard Report. To put those events into present-day perspective, the authors reviewed all papers published on this subject and (...)

Hermeneutics and phenomenology in the social sciences: lessons from the Austrian School of Economics case.Gabriel J. Zanotti, Agustina Borella & Nicolás Cachanosky - forthcoming - The Review of Austrian Economics.
We study a case that applies hermeneutics to social sciences, in particular to the Austrian School of economics. We argue that an inaccurate treatment of hermeneutics contributed to an epistemological downgrade of the Austrian School in the economic scientific community. We discuss hoe this shortcoming can be fixed and how a proper hermeneutic application to the Austrian school explains why this school of thought is neither positivist nor postmodern.

Still a Nation of White Immigrants? Notes on the Present Debate.Gabriel J. Chin - 2023 - Public Affairs Quarterly 37 (3):188-208.
Recent years have generated an unprecedented popular decision about US racial identity. Before this, popular sentiment and legal policy clearly and congruently promoted immigration of white noncitizens, while severely restricting others. Until the Immigration and Nationality Act Amendments of 1965, the US law reflected Justice Grier's statement in Smith v. Turner, 48 U.S. 283, 461 (1849): “It is the cherished policy of the general government to encourage and invite Christian foreigners of our own race to seek an asylum within our (...)

Comparative analyses of speech and language converge on birds.Gabriël J. L. Beckers, Robert C. Berwick & Johan J. Bolhuis - 2014 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 37 (6):547-548.
Unlike nonhuman primates, thousands of bird species have articulatory capabilities that equal or surpass those of humans, and they develop their vocalizations through vocal imitation in a way that is very similar to how human infants learn to speak. An understanding of how speech mechanisms have evolved is therefore unlikely to yield key insights into how the human brain is special.

    Exploring Variation Between Artificial Grammar Learning Experiments: Outlining a Meta‐Analysis Approach.Antony S. Trotter, Padraic Monaghan, Gabriël J. L. Beckers & Morten H. Christiansen - 2020 - Topics in Cognitive Science 12 (3):875-893.
Studies of AGL have frequently used training and test stimuli that might provide multiple cues for learning, raising the question what subjects have actually learned. Using a selected subset of studies on humans and non‐human animals, Trotter et al. demonstrate how a meta‐analysis can be used to identify relevant experimental variables, providing a first step in asssessing the relative contribution of design features of grammars as well as of species‐specific effects on AGL.

Implications of an ethic of privacy for human-centred systems engineering.Peter J. Carew, Larry Stapleton & Gabriel J. Byrne - 2008 - AI and Society 22 (3):385-403.
Privacy remains an intractable ethical issue for the information society, and one that is exacerbated by modern applications of artificial intelligence. Given its complicity, there is a moral obligation to redress privacy issues in systems engineering practice itself. This paper investigates the role the concept of privacy plays in contemporary systems engineering practice. Ontologically a nominalist human concept, privacy is considered from an appropriate engineering perspective: human-centred design. Two human-centred design standards are selected as exemplars of best practice, and are (...)

Is there a duty to routinely reinterpret genomic variant classifications?Gabriel Watts & Ainsley J. Newson - 2023 - Journal of Medical Ethics 49 (12):808-814.
Multiple studies show that periodic reanalysis of genomic test results held by clinical laboratories delivers significant increases in overall diagnostic yield. However, while there is a widespread consensus that implementing routine reanalysis procedures is highly desirable, there is an equally widespread understanding that routine reanalysis of individual patient results is not presently feasible to perform for all patients. Instead, researchers, geneticists and ethicists are beginning to turn their attention to one part of reanalysis—reinterpretation of previously classified variants—as a means of (...)

Identity Theft, Deep Brain Stimulation, and the Primacy of Post‐trial Obligations.Joseph J. Fins, Amanda R. Merner, Megan S. Wright & Gabriel Lázaro-Muñoz - 2024 - Hastings Center Report 54 (1):34-41.
Patient narratives from two investigational deep brain stimulation trials for traumatic brain injury and obsessive‐compulsive disorder reveal that injury and illness rob individuals of personal identity and that neuromodulation can restore it. The early success of these interventions makes a compelling case for continued post‐trial access to these technologies. Given the centrality of personal identity to respect for persons, a failure to provide continued access can be understood to represent a metaphorical identity theft. Such a loss recapitulates the pain of (...)

To offer or request? Disclosing variants of uncertain significance in prenatal testing.Gabriel Watts & Ainsley J. Newson - 2021 - Bioethics (9):900-909.
The use of genomic testing in pregnancy is increasing, giving rise to questions over how the information that is generated should be offered and returned in clinical practice. While these tests provide important information for prenatal decision-making, they can also generate information of uncertain significance. This paper critically examines three models for approaching the disclosure of variants of uncertain significance (VUS), which can arise from forms of genomic testing such as prenatal chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA). Contrary to prevailing arguments, we (...)

A key aim in biology and psychology is to identify fundamental principles underpinning the behavior of animals, including humans. Analyses of human language and the behavior of a range of non-human animal species have provided evidence for a common pattern underlying diverse behavioral phenomena: Words follow Zipf's law of brevity (the tendency of more frequently used words to be shorter), and conformity to this general pattern has been seen in the behavior of a number of other animals. It has been (...)

Why Educational Neuroscience Needs Educational and School Psychology to Effectively Translate Neuroscience to Educational Practice.Gabrielle Wilcox, Laura M. Morett, Zachary Hawes & Eleanor J. Dommett - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
The emerging discipline of educational neuroscience stands at a crossroads between those who see great promise in integrating neuroscience and education and those who see the disciplinary divide as insurmountable. However, such tension is at least partly due to the hitherto predominance of philosophy and theory over the establishment of concrete mechanisms and agents of change. If educational neuroscience is to move forward and emerge as a distinct discipline in its own right, the traditional boundaries and methods must be bridged, (...)

The Problem of Universals in Contemporary Philosophy.Gabriele Galluzzo & Michael J. Loux (eds.) - 2015 - New York, NY: Cambridge University Press.
Are there any universal entities? Or is the world populated only by particular things? The problem of universals is one of the most fascinating and enduring topics in the history of metaphysics, with roots in ancient and medieval philosophy. This collection of new essays provides an innovative overview of the contemporary debate on universals. Rather than focusing exclusively on the traditional opposition between realism and nominalism, the contributors explore the complexity of the debate and illustrate a broad range of positions (...)

    The promise and peril of CRISPR gene drives.Gabriel E. Zentner & Michael J. Wade - 2017 - Bioessays 39 (10):1700109.
Gene drives are selfish genetic elements that use a variety of mechanisms to ensure they are transmitted to subsequent generations at greater than expected frequencies. Synthetic gene drives based on the clustered regularly interspersed palindromic repeats genome editing system have been proposed as a way to alter the genetic characteristics of natural populations of organisms relevant to the goals of public health, conservation, and agriculture. Here, we review the principles and potential applications of CRISPR drives, as well as means proposed (...)

    Reconsidering reinterpretation: response to commentaries.Gabriel Watts & Ainsley J. Newson - 2023 - Journal of Medical Ethics 49 (12):824-825.
The results of tests carried out using next-generation genomic sequencing (NGS) possess a peculiar and perhaps unique ‘diagnostic durability’. Unlike most other forms of testing, if genomic results or data are stored over time, then it remains possible to interrogate that information indefinitely, without having to retest the patient. Another peculiar property of genomic results is that their interpretations are subject to change within relatively short time frames. For instance, a genomic variant that is of uncertain significance (VUS) at the (...)

After a brief overview of the scientific data on cloning, the article examines the ethical issues put forth by this particular form of reproduction. A distinction is made between the application of cloning to the animal and vegetable realms and to the human species. The cloning of plants and animals is ethically permissible if it guarantees the preservation of species and of genetic diversity within the species. Humankind is not entitled to an absolute and irresponsible dominion -ius utendi et abutendi (...)
